Equipping the Homestead - Homesteading Supplies for the Kitchen

!9#: Equipping the Homestead - Homesteading Supplies for the Kitchen

If you're just getting started building a homestead, there are some homesteading supplies for the kitchen you may want to put on your list. Just like in any kitchen, plates, bowls, glasses, cutlery, a knife set et al are still going to be used. But there are some additional items that are used in the process of cooking and food storage that you will find valuable. Some of the items you may already have and use, and some you may not.

For cooking and baking, having non electric hand tools will be invaluable in the event of power outage. Some hand tools for your list are a can opener, hand beater (think egg beater), grain mill (useful for coffee as well as grains), manual meat grinder, juicer, rolling pin, grater, potato masher, strainer, wire whisk, non-electric yogurt maker, bread toaster, knife sharpener, potato peeler, nut chopper, garlic press, and a flour sifter. This is not an inclusive list, but will get you started.

Having the ability to prepare and cook your own food under any circumstances is invaluable. Containers for cooking that will last and be usable with or without electricity would include, but not be limited to, cast iron pots and pans, a dutch oven, a solar oven, a stock pot, crockery or enamel ware, stainless steel and ceramic bowls, a roasting pan, cooling racks, broiler pan, cast iron teapot, and a stove top coffee percolator.

Preserving the food you have, especially from your own garden, is a critical element to homesteading and one for which there are more homesteading supplies needed. One way to preserve food is to dehydrate it. A good electric dehydrator will help you preserve a lot of food fairly quickly, but it would also be wise to have a non electric dehydration method just in case. Canning is another excellent way to preserve the bounty of your garden. There are two basic method for canning, water bath and pressure. A pressure cooker/canner is an essential element to canning and is necessary for low acid foods and meats. If you had to only have one way to can, pressure canning would be it since you are able to can all kinds of food in a pressure canner.

A water bath canner is also good, it is inexpensive and useful, just cannot be used for all types of canning. Aside from a pressure canner and a water bath canner additional canning supplies include jars, lids, jar top funnels, cooling racks, jar tongs, and a pressure gauge.

As mentioned, it is entirely possible that you already have some of these items, but making yourself a shopping list would be a good step to fully equipping your homestead kitchen.

Decaffeinated Coffee - Improve Your Health

!9# Decaffeinated Coffee - Improve Your Health

Nowadays, people are becoming aware of the advantages of good health. One of the pillars of good health is the kind of food that a person eats. It has been proven through clinical researches that consumption of fatty foods and stimulants in changing the health profile of people. This coupled with a sedentary lifestyle has become the root of all health problems.

People are becoming choosy with what they eat. One of the things that people are avoiding is coffee, which is known to be rich in stimulants. For those who cannot resist the temptation of a hot cup of coffee, there is an alternative of decaffeinated coffee. For a long time, the process of producing decaf coffee was to soak the coffee beans in a solvent that would leach out the stimulants. However, there were concerns raised by the medical professionals around the safety of this process. It was argued that the solvent used to decaffeinate the coffee beans found its way into the bodies of people consuming this product. It was also promulgated that decaf produced by the solvent process could lead to cancer. Because of these controversies around the safety of the coffee, people switched off from it.

Nowadays, with the advancement in the processing technology, it is possible to manufacture decaf coffee through a process that is safer. One of the latest methods, supposed to be safer than the conventional method, is by soaking the coffee beans in Swiss water. The water removes the caffeine naturally, producing decaffeinated coffee without harmful chemicals. Since the coffee manufacturers want to highlight this difference, a consumer can easily identify a coffee produced by this method just by checking the label.

One of the issues that people have reported with decaf is the difference in its taste when compared to the regular dark roast coffee. The typical taste of coffee results from the presence of caffeine. Since in the process of decaffeinating, the caffeine is removed from the beans, resulting in coffee that is devoid of the typical taste. For people who want to switch to decaf on a regular basis, it is advisable that they make the switch slowly. One of the alternatives is to mix the regular coffee in equal proportion with decaffeinated coffee. Slowly, over the next few days, the portion of decaffeinated coffee should be increased. This would help in making the switch to decaffeinated coffee a lot easier.

Healthy diet is crucial to ensuring good health. This would involve making changes to the regular diet regime. But with some amount of determination, it is possible to make this switch that would go a long way in ensuring good health.

Stand Mixer Buying Advice

!9# Stand Mixer Buying Advice

[if ]
[endif]

Heavy-duty stand mixers are no longer reserved for the professional chef. Many kitchens are now sporting this sleek modern convenience as even the novice cook is finding the benefits of the stand mixer to be invaluable. Stand mixers can finish off time-consuming steps like beating egg whites or whipping cream in a flash, or put a family-size batch of mashed potatoes on the dinner table in mere minutes. Unlike portable mixers, powerful stand mixers can take on heavy-duty chores like blending flour into stiff cookie dough and kneading bread. If you are in the market for a stand mixer, you need to choose the one that fits your lifestyle and budget, whether you're a novice cupcake-baker or a serious home chef.

Mixing Action

Most stand mixers share the same basic setup - a mixer head mounted on a base that holds the mixing bowl. The head tilts up or lifts with a lever so you can attach or remove the beater(s). But all beaters are not created equal.

Budget stand mixers often use the familiar pair of stationary, interlocking beaters seen on hand mixers, with a rotating bowl. If you're an occasional baker, this type of stand mixer can get light tasks done at a bargain price, but be warned, it will likely struggle with stiff cookie or bread dough. The beaters can get too clogged to spin, and the bowl may stop turning. Also, since the beaters can't reach the bowl's edges, you'll be scraping down the sides frequently.

The best choice for most buyers is a stand mixer with "planetary mixing action." In this design a single flat beater (or other attachment) moves the way a planet orbits the sun simultaneously spinning on its own axis and traveling a circular path around the bowl. This motion creates more contact between beater and ingredients, acing tasks like creaming butter or blending flour into dough in record time. Another time saver - the beater makes it to every part of the bowl, so you seldom need to scrape it down.

Power and Speeds

Are you going to use your stand mixer frequently for tough jobs like bread kneading? If so, you'll want a powerful model, but determining power can be confusing. Stand mixer motors are rated in watts. Different mixers offer anywhere from 200 to over 1000 watts of power. But don't be too impressed by a high wattage rating it's mainly a marketing gimmick. Stand mixer tests and reviews consistently show little correlation between wattage and performance. One helpful measure of a stand mixer's true power is the number of cups of flour it can handle. KitchenAid has a "Flour Power" rating in their stand mixer descriptions, ranging from 8 to14 cups depending on the model. A bread enthusiast should choose a stand mixer that can tame 10 or more cups.

Speeds are another case where you shouldn't get hung up on numbers. Stand mixers offer anywhere from 3 to 15 speeds, which are adjusted with dials, slide levers, push buttons, or digital touch pads. Slow speeds incorporate dry ingredients without flinging them out of the bowl; the fastest speeds are used to whip cream or egg whites. You'll want to choose a stand mixer with at least 5 or 6 variations for the best control, but more, while they certainly won't hurt, won't affect performance much.

Attachments

Budget stand mixers may come with a pair of standard chrome or stainless stationary beaters, and not much else. They'll do the trick on simple batters, but if breads, cookies, and meringues are part of your baking routine, you'll get better results if you have the right tools for the job. That's where attachments come in. Opt for a planetary action stand mixer that comes outfitted with a flat beater for efficient stirring/blending, a wire whisk for whipping tasks, and a dough hook tailored for kneading bread. Some stand mixers also come with a splash guard, a pouring chute for adding ingredients, or a very handy second mixing bowl.

Serious cooks should check out mid-to-high-end stand mixers that can accept a myriad of optional attachments. Accessories like juicers, meat grinders, grain mills, pasta makers, sausage stuffers, can openers and shredders can convert a stand mixer into a multi-purpose kitchen workhorse. Of course these extras will boost cost, so carefully consider which ones you'll actually use.

Size Matters

Stand mixers are hefty items, many weighing well over 20 pounds. A heavier all-metal mixer will be more durable than a lightweight, partially plastic model, and also more stable less likely to "walk" across your counter during mixing. A lighter model may need a hand to steady it occasionally not ideal if "hands-free" mixing is your goal. However, if you're planning to stow your stand mixer in a cabinet between uses, lighter can have advantages. Be realistic about how many pounds you can comfortably lift and maneuver.

Many cooks skip the lifting and make their stand mixer a permanent fixture on their countertop. If that's your plan, consider height as well. If the mixer will live under a cabinet, make sure you have sufficient clearance, including enough extra room to tilt the head up.

The other size issue to consider is capacity. Stand mixer bowls hold anywhere from 1 ½ to 7 quarts. 4 to 6 quarts should be plenty for most cooks. If you need to feed a dozen hungry people or make double batches of bread, you can choose a super size 7-quart bowl, but these can be very tall and hard to scrape down, and may be too big when you just need to beat a couple eggs. Some stand mixers come with two bowls of different sizes, letting you pick the best size for the task at hand.

Styling

There's a good chance your stand mixer is going to stay on your countertop, where you'll see it every day. Luckily, these machines are often as decorative as they are functional. Performance is crucial, but once you've identified the features that are right for you, don't be shy about considering looks too. Long gone are the days when a plain white stand mixer was your only choice. KitchenAid offers classic styling in a rainbow of over 20 hues like Almond Cream, Green Apple, and Bing Cherry. Other stand mixer manufacturers have followed suit, so even in the budget range, you'll find a selection of colors.

If classic isn't quite you, Hamilton Beach and Sunbeam offer stand mixers with retro appeal, and DeLonghi's design has a sleek modern edge. Great styling that coordinates with your kitchen will give you one more reason to love your stand mixer.

Quality Mark - Can you trust It?

!9# Quality Mark - Can you trust It?

[if ]

Cuisinart. Black and Decker. Maytag. These sound like the brand you can trust. But what is a brand these days? It is the lone Maytag repairman sitting waiting for a call, because his company's products are of high quality? Or is it because none of the products are actually made or serviced by Maytag, Maytag, or even covered by a warranty?

I have an increasing trend over the past decade or so have noticed, for companies that have built a reputationfor their brands, sometimes over decades or even centuries, to prove that reputation by linking its brand to products of other people's money. Sears was sold in a master with the Kenmore brand to a large number of products from different manufacturers, as far as I know, Sears is not really much of anything themselves. But this new kind of brand marketing is different. A company like Sears still offers services for the products they sell, andPresumably they must be very careful about what they choose to brand and sell products. The new breed is not set their seal of approval on someone else's product and then sell them. And 'the sale of the brand itself, so that someone can take advantage of the reputation of the brand.

I found this a few years ago, when I got bread maker Black & Decker in difficulty, wholemeal bread, loaves of bread after a few too many. The paddle has started slipping on the paddle, so that the bread do not mixproperly. I needed a new paddle, and called the company Black & Decker. To my surprise, I discovered that Black & Decker, the well-known manufacturers or distributors of so many common household tools, not only failed to produce Black & Decker kitchen appliances, but not sold, in fact, not. They had their trademark licensed to someone else.

Consumer product applications, the company sells bread makers, can openers, food processors and other products, the brand Black & Decker to wearto call. They were at some point in the past, these devices actually sold by Black and Decker himself. But at least until the end of 2010, applications are charged a minimum of $ 12.5 million a year for Black & Decker before the law, the trust mark for products that are now sold and serviced exclusively by-stick applications.

This practice has obvious appeal to the popular brands looking for more money to improve their income. An injection of $ 12.5 million in cash for yearno cost (except perhaps a little 'legal fees), a company may seem much more profitable than a corresponding infusion of cash from sales of current products, where the cost of goods sold and other expenses must be deducted. This is a great thing for the brand owner and licensees - one for the money, the reputation of others. Unfortunately it is not always so good for the consumer.

If Black & Decker, the problem for consumers is that you are buying a brandbased in part on the trust the brand, but the appliance industry has to buy something with the company that has built a reputation on this brand. In other words, you think you are buying quality because of the name, but there is absolutely no guarantee that this is the case. As I discovered when I finally throw away my original Black & Decker replacement "Black and Decker" bread machine life is not up to the same standards pretty high. In other words, a companypurchased the license for a brand known for its quality, and then sometimes squandered that reputation.

Another well-known brand, which sold its name to a line of lower-quality product, Maytag Corporation. Maytag Fedders Corporation licensed its brand to sell air conditioners, after Fedders was in financial difficulties, while the branches of these units, which were his specialty, and in less lucrative commercial HVAC room. Fedders necessary to increase sales quickly, and the addition of awhole new line of products under the Maytag name behind it was obviously a fix. This helped for a while ', but unfortunately Fedders had the seeds of its own destruction, by sowing the link quality and offshoring more and more of the component manufacturer, and lastly, the installation of machines, its small air conditioning systems . The end result is that air conditioning systems with the Maytag brand was always full of quality problems, and the people who actually read before buyingdiscovered that this is not a good product to buy.

Fedders suffered, as well as a series of unusually cold summers and the failure in 2007. Imagine the surprise of the discontented "Maytag" I called Maytag customer for warranty support to their units, only to find that Maytag had nothing to do with the products behind the brand and not be in the case of products from Fedders done.

This is why it is so important to do your researchon each product before purchasing it. Cuisinart did great food processor until it is bankrupt in 1989, the company that bought connate do, continue the same food processor, and in my experience the quality of new devices, at least good, if not so outstanding as the 'original. Cuisinart but also sells a range of other appliances such as coffee makers and bread machines. They lived up to our expectations of the brand Cuisinart? My experience with aCuisinart bread machine was not in line with my hopes for the name. It 'made bricks baked bread heavy and I was back to the store in a week! (That is, if I my second Black and Decker, who have not much better.)

To search for reviews of products you want to buy before your money. There is not a bad idea to change the words "brand" and "License" along with the brand name in a search on the Internet, if they try to learn more about theProduct that you are after. You may find that the brand you buy is a name and nothing more.

A rose by any other name, like the smell - but renamed a dandelion, which is a rose, with a licensing agreement worth several million dollars a year is a great addition to your garden with flowers.
